College Access and Persistence Services (CAPS)
The CAPS Outreach Center at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, provides outreach services designed to support, increase, and strengthen college-bound low-income and first-generation individuals. Within this population, CAPS places special emphasis on underrepresented minorities who symbolize the least-advantaged segments of the population. Academic Enrichment Upward Bound (AEUB)
AEUB provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. It serves local high school students from low-income families and high school students from families where neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. The goal of AEUB is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. Educational Opportunity Center (EOC)
The EOC assists low-income first-generation participants to complete secondary school requirements and enroll in postsecondary education programs. Services are offered at several locations, including Knoxville and Athens in Tennessee, Franklin in North Carolina, and Blue Ridge in Georgia. Learn more about the Educational Opportunity Center.
Math and Science Center (MSC)
The MSC strengthens the math and science skills of participating students. The goal of the program is to help these students recognize and develop their potential to excel in these subjects, to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in related disciplines, and, ultimately, to obtain careers in the many professional fields of math and science. Pre-College Upward Bound (PCUB)
The PCUB project is designed to help low-income potential first-generation college students to graduate from high school and to enroll in a postsecondary institution of their choice that aligns well with their educational and professional goals. Activities and services include tutoring, ACT preparation, college and career information, instruction in academic subjects, cultural enrichment, and one-on-one individual development (i.e., vision, mission, values, goals, assessment of personal strengths and potential barriers, and steps to take to progress satisfactorily toward one’s goals), and six-week summer programs at UT that provide students a chance to experience college life.
